EDWARD BAWDEN CBE RA (1903-1989)

Edward Bawden was an English painter, illustrator and graphic artist, known for his prints, book covers, posters and his work for the London Underground.  He was born in Braintree, Essex.  His parents were Methodist Christians and as a child he spent solitary time drawing or studying the local wildlife.  At Braintree High School he studied the drawings of cats by Louis Wain and also illustrations in magazines and later went to the Friends’ School at Saffron Walden where the headmaster recommended him for study at Cambridge School of Art, where he attended from 1919-1921.
